Apple apps such as QuickTime Player, Photos, and Keynote work with many kinds of audio and video formats. Some apps prefer specific formats, but QuickTime movie files (.mov), most MPEG files (.mp4, .m4v, .m4a, .mp3, .mpg), some AVI and WAV files, and many other formats usually work in most apps without additional software.
MOV is a format developed by Apple and used for movie and other video data storage. It is compatible both with Windows and Mac. However, Windows Media Player can open only early versions of the file extension. If you have versions 2.0 and higher, you need Apple QuickTime Player or you can convert it to other format compatible with your player. The MOV format is supported primarily by Apple devices, while MPEG is used more widely across other platforms. Besides, MOV files are media containers that are easier to edit than MPEG files. More details are in the MPEG vs. MOV comparison table below. Just download the MOV-to-MPEG converter for Windows (XP/Vista/7/8/10) or Mac OS X (10.7 or higher) and follow the guide below to learn how to convert MOV to MPEG on PC or Mac. Download and Install SuperSpeed Video Converter. Download the installation file, then open it. You are allowed to convert HD video, AVCHD video, and common video like AVI, WMV, FLV, MOV, MPEG, M4V, MPG, 3GP to MP4 format. You can play the converted video/audio files on diverse multimedia players like iPhone X/8/7/SE/6s/6s Plus/6/6 Plus/5s/5c/5/4S, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini, and iPod touch. Apple apps such as QuickTime Player, Photos, and Keynote work with many kinds of audio and video formats. Some apps prefer specific formats, but QuickTime movie files (.mov), most MPEG files (.mp4,.m4v,.m4a,.mp3,.mpg), some AVI and WAV files, and many other formats usually work in most apps without additional software.
Older or specialized media formats might not work in your app, because the format requires software designed to support it. If that happens, your app won't open the file or won't play back its audio or video.

How to search for an app that works with your file
You might already have an app that supports the format of your file. If you don't know which of your installed apps to try, your Mac might be able to suggest one:
![Mov To Mpeg For Mac Mov To Mpeg For Mac](/uploads/1/1/7/7/117755225/142245570.jpg)
- Control-click (or right-click) the file in the Finder.
- From the shortcut menu that opens, choose Open With. You should see a submenu listing all of the other installed apps that your Mac thinks might be able to open the file.
If none of your installed apps can open the file, search the Internet or Mac App Store for apps that can play or convert the file:
- Include the name of the media format in your search. To find the format, select the file and press Command-I to open an Info window. The format might appear after the label Kind, such as ”Kind: Matroska Video File.”
- Include the filename extension in your search. The extension is the letters shown at the end of the file's name, such as .avi,.wmv, or .mkv.

MOV is a file type extension—not a file compression format. You can manually change any file extension to anything you want at the file/Finder level. However, this does not change the file data actually contained in the file nor does it change the file container type. Therefore, assuming the MOV file does not already actually contain 'muxed' MPEG-2 content, you would have to re-compress the file data using whatever converter you may have available. iDVD, Compressor, and Toast are common applications that can create 'muxed' MPEG-2 content depending on the combination of MPEG-2 and AC3 or MPEG-2 and PCM content you are trying to create. Once you have transcoded the data you can then modify the audio stream to MPEG-2 layered audio and place the data in a file container (e.g., MPG, MPEG, TS, elementary M2V and AIFF streams, etc.) depending on your particular needs.
As to the use of AVI file containers, audio and video codec support will depend on which applications you intend to use and the codecs you wish to target. The easiest option here would likely be to simply use the free HandBrake application to convert your MOV file to an AVI file assuming the MOV file contains data compression formats supported by HandBrake. (E.g., Apple 'Pro' editing video formats would not be supported by HandBrake.)
